Students in a new Podcasting Club at Lawton Alternative K8 School are making sure their voices are heard both in school and over the airwaves. The student-produced podcast covers topics including video games, climate change and criteria that students believe the 46th president should have. Creating the podcast helps to reinforce for students that their opinions matter. Students will submit their recordings as part of the NPR Student Podcast Challenge.

Schools across the country, including more than 40 SFUSD elementary, middle and high schools, will participate in various Digital Learning Day events on Thursday. The day will include using digital design tools to promote positivity, learning about careers in tech from Twitter volunteers, a STEM Night for students and families, a workshop about Augmented Reality for Education, and unique professional development opportunities for educators. The day aims to transform how students learn college and career skills to help them thrive in the 21st century.

Beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss said, “You’re never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read to a child.” In that spirit, Sunset Elementary School will celebrate National Read Aloud Day and Dr. Seuss’ birthday by inviting community members to read to students. This annual event continues a tradition that brings City dignitaries together to honor the love of reading. National Read Aloud Day will include Superintendent Dr. Vincent Matthews, SFUSD administrators, San Francisco Police Chief William Scott, Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White, and others.
