Highlights Feb. 19-23, 2019: African American Honor Roll Celebration, Heritage Assembly Celebrates Black Leaders, Oratorical Contest and Stomp Competition Link to this section
More than 1,500 students from across the district will be honored at the 25th annual African American Honor Roll Celebration. The student-emceed community celebration, sponsored by the San Francisco Alliance of Black School Educators, will present students in grades 3-12 who are earning a 3.0 Grade Point Average (GPA) or higher, with a medallion, red ribbon and certificate. Students who have earned a 4.0 GPA will be given special recognition and presented with an ancestral Kente cloth. The program will include student performances as well as words of congratulations, encouragement and motivation from Mayor London Breed. The event celebrates academic achievement and encourages students to keep striving for excellence.

Reading a poem by Maya Angelou, sharing a tribute to Nelson Mandela, and performing a spoken word about Yvonne Cagle are just a few of the tributes to accomplished African American leaders by students as part of the African American Heritage Assembly at James Lick Middle School. Mayor London Breed will also speak to students at the assembly. Last year James Lick Middle adopted a mission statement that articulates the school’s commitment to support students’ development of leadership skills so that they can make a positive impact on their local and global communities.

Students, families and community members will gather at Mission High School for the San Francisco Alliance of Black School Educators’ 39th Annual Oratorical/Musical Contest and Stomp Competition. Dozens of students grades K-12 from schools across the district are expected to compete by reciting famous and original poems and speeches, singing and playing instruments, and performing step routines in a stomp competition aligned with this year’s theme, “African American Millennium: Achieving Greatness with An Attitude of Excellence.” The competition encourages students to develop memorization, interpretation, and delivery skills, in addition to providing a platform for students to showcase their talent while honoring African American history and culture.
