WHAT 
SFUSD will celebrate the donation of more than 10 Pepper robots, with plans to donate up to 30, to the City’s public high schools by SoftBank Group, in collaboration with SoftBank Robotics America. SFUSD has worked with SoftBank to develop robotics curriculum that is now taught in high school computer science classes.

WHY 
Pepper is a humanoid robot and innovative tool that sparks interest in computer science among students. The Science, Technology, Math and Engineering (STEM) fields are some of the fastest-growing industries in the workforce today, and preparing students for STEM is a priority of SFUSD. 

AUDIO/VISUAL 
Students in Galileo’s Girls Coding Club will demonstrate how they use Pepper robots to create custom applications that include conversation, animation, images, and more. Representatives from SoftBank and SFUSD will be available to speak with media. 

ABOUT COMPUTER SCIENCE IN SFUSD 
SFUSD is the first large, urban school district in the U.S. to create a comprehensive pre-K to 12 computer science curriculum. The number of students participating in computer science instruction has dramatically increased since 2013-14, currently reaching half of the 54,000 students taught in SFUSD, with overall participation that mirrors district enrollment.
