WHAT
San Francisco city and school district leaders will announce a new curriculum unit specifically focused on educating students about earthquakes and how to be prepared for them. The unit allows students to engage in taking on real-life tasks that use San Francisco as the classroom.

WHY
Within the next 30 years in the Bay Area, there is a 72% chance an earthquake with a magnitude-6.7 will occur, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. This curriculum upholds a citywide effort to increase preparedness for the potential impact of the next major quake to hit the Bay Area.

School and city leaders will speak about a new Earthquake Unit for 7th grade science curriculum in SFUSD. Teacher Vicente Patino will then lead City and District leaders, along with students, in an emergency preparedness exercise based on the San Francisco Department of Emergency Management’s SF72 emergency preparedness program (www.SF72.org).
