Even before President Obama’s call to schools to teach computer science as a basic skill, SFUSD was already leading the nation with a commitment to expand computer science education to all students at all schools, from preschool through 12th grade. This year computer science courses are taught in all SFUSD middle and high schools. On Wednesday, Salesforce co-founder Parker Harris will be joining Visitacion Valley Middle School students as they learn new coding skills. The day of events will include lessons, career talks and a maker fair during lunch. It’s part of the national “Hour of Code” movement, which is focused on introducing young people to computer science to demystify what coding is and to show them that anyone can learn to be a maker, creator or innovator.

When: Wednesday, Dec. 14 / 12:30-1:30 p.m.

Where: Visitacion Valley MS / 450 Raymond Ave.

Every Wednesday, seventh graders at Willie L. Brown Middle School (WBMS) get on charter buses headed to some of the world’s top tech companies like Google, Salesforce and Adobe, where each student partners with a mentor to tackle a project of the student’s choice. The program is organized and supported by Spark Bay Area and WBMS. Many of the companies that students work with are STEAM-based (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics), with experts who provide guidance on career paths and projects. Now that the fall session is complete, students and mentors will present their projects at the school’s Share Your Spark event.

When: Wednesday, Dec. 14 / 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Where: Willie Brown MS / 2055 Silver Ave.

SFUSD schools will be closed from December 19, 2016 to January 2, 2017 for winter break.
