SF Board of Education commits to equitable and sustainable student transportation

December 10, 2015 (San Francisco) – At this week’s regular San Francisco Board of Education meeting, commissioners approved a resolution to continue the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD)’s pursuit of strategies to advance equitable, healthy, and sustainable transportation for all students and families at all schools.

The resolution calls for SFUSD to develop a long-term vision for advancing transportation that reduces the percentage of single-family car trips to school from 45 percent to 30 percent by the year 2030. It calls for the process to align with Vision Zero and incorporate demographic projections from the City of San Francisco.

“Walking, biking, and public transit are some of the many forms of active transportation that are healthy alternatives to driving,” said Board of Education Vice President Matt Haney, who co-authored the resolution with Commissioner Hydra Mendoza-McDonnell.

“And we all know that reducing the number of car trips to and from school can significantly reduce traffic congestion here in our city,” Haney added.

School district officials will work with a program called Safe Routes to School to expand district-wide. They will also assess transportation culture and conditions at schools and provide additional support, regarding sustainable transportation, as needed.

Schools will be asked to provide storage for bicycles, and support for additional modes of transportation such as scooters and skateboards.

Additionally, the SFUSD Transportation Department will give preference to zero-emission vehicles when it renews bus service contracts.
