Wearing their best clothes, dozens of newly-emigrated elementary students will gather to enjoy a feast of turkey, mashed potatoes, vegetables, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie to celebrate Thanksgiving for the first time. Afterward they’ll sing “This Land Is Your Land,” “Mr. Turkey,” and “Let There Be Peace on Earth.” Students at the Mission Education Center (MEC) are recent immigrants who speak Spanish; families have the option to enroll students in the MEC for a year before beginning at a regular school. This event is sponsored by the Geneva-Mission Lions Club.

When:     Friday, Nov. 20 / 12:30 – 1:30 p.m.

Where:    Mission Education Center / 1670 Noe St.

The Chinese Education Center (CEC) Elementary School will celebrate their newcomer students' very first Thanksgiving in the United States with songs, a holiday play and a Thanksgiving feast provided by the Hilton San Francisco Financial District. Friends from the Chinatown YMCA, Chinatown Rotary Club, Chinatown Lions Club, Square and Circle, Wells Fargo Bank, and other community agencies will join the celebration along with SF Board of Education commissioners.

When:     Tuesday, Nov. 24 / 10:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

The Culinary Arts and Restaurant students at John O’Connell High are not only learning how to cook, they’re engaged in a rigorous, in-depth course to prepare them in both theory and practice using the school's lab integration model. This fall, students studied marketing and American history to prepare for and understand the significance of Thanksgiving.  The holiday menu, served to school staff, features locally sourced classics with a Pacific Rim accent and relies more on direct flavors than fat. The menu includes pomegranate persimmon saladbraised turkey leg mole enchiladas, layered North Coast mushroom trio terrines, pumpkin cheesecake, and coconut cream brownies.

SFUSD schools will be closed Nov. 25-27 for Thanksgiving Recess.
