Statement from Superintendent Carranza Regarding Death of Teacher Ed Cavanaugh Link to this section
August 5, 2015 (San Francisco) – Our hearts are with Ed Cavanaugh’s family and all those who knew and loved him. Our community has experienced a devastating loss.
Mr. Cavanaugh spent 14 years teaching in SFUSD, the majority of time at Downtown High School, where he taught youth who face tremendous challenges in their lives.
He was an outstanding educator who shared his love of science and nature through an interdisciplinary project-based learning course called “Get out and learn.” He forged a strong partnership with the Ft. Miley ropes course where he brought students, and eventually many had the opportunity to then become hired members of the Ft. Miley staff.
Ed did what all of us in education hope to do – he changed many lives for the better. His students and colleagues speak to his enduring enthusiasm for teaching and his dogged commitment to his students. They describe him as a very kind and charismatic person who was also very persistent - students knew that there was someone who would never give up on them. He also had a great sense of humor that uplifted all those around him.
We are planning a time when students and staff can come together to celebrate and remember Mr. Cavanaugh. More information for students and staff will be forthcoming.
