Message to SFUSD Employees Link to this section
Dear Colleagues:
Today Indiana Governor Mike Pence signed the Religious Freedom Restoration Act into law, thereby legalizing discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals. The San Francisco Unified School District stands united with the City and County of San Francisco and our San Francisco community to condemn Indiana’s new discriminatory law, and will continue to work together to protect the civil rights of all Americans including lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students and staff.
Effective immediately, I am barring publicly-funded school district employee and student travel to the State of Indiana (and I will personally review any requests for exceptions). As an inclusive school district supported by our San Francisco taxpayers, we will not subsidize legally-sanctioned discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people by the State of Indiana.
When terrible acts like these are committed, I am grateful once again to be part of a community that seeks to make social justice a reality every day. Your work is challenging and so important. I hope you have a restful spring break in the week ahead.
Sincerely,
Richard
