Superintendent Search

The San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) is conducting a superintendent search, with the firm Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates (HYA). HYA is a network of independent education consultants across the nation. This independent network has made HYA the preeminent education consulting firm with over 30 years of executive search and education consulting experience.  Since 1987, HYA has provided support for education leaders to employ school executives, address issues related to student performance, and support aspects of school district operations.  A contract with HYA was approved at the November 9, 2021 Board of Education Meeting.

The superintendent search process will include stakeholder input opportunities, robust community engagement and outreach efforts, intensive and confidential vetting of candidates, and presentation of candidates to the SFUSD Board of Education.

What’s Happening Now

The San Francisco Board of Education voted unanimously to approve the contract for Dr. Matt Wayne to serve as the new Superintendent of the San Francisco Unified School District. Dr. Wayne will begin transitioning into the role of superintendent on July 1, 2022.

Timeline

Time What Happened
January 25, 2022 The HYA consultants presented the Leadership Profile Report describing what they learned during the community engagement phase.  The Commissioners used that information to define the Desired Characteristics that they were seeking in the next superintendent.
Late January – Late March
Recruitment Phase
HYA consultants recruited and vetted candidates who either applied independently or were recommended for the position. 
March 23, 2022 Application deadline
Late March The Commissioners reviewed all applications that were submitted and determined the candidates they wished to bring in for initial interviews.
Early April The Commissioners met to select the first round of candidates.
Late April
Selection Phase
The Commissioners conducted initial interviews and narrowed the field of candidates down to the semi-finalists.
Late April-Early May
Selection Phase
The Commissioners invited the semi-finalists back for a second interview.
May The Commissioners selected their preferred candidate and conducted the final stages of their due diligence. Contract negotiations also occurred at this time.
