Soaring Steel!
July 2024: Community members, trade partners, and fellow agencies joined the project team in celebrating the Topping Out" of the structure. Attendees signed the last steel beam to be installed, and crews flew it into place and bolted it in signifying completion of the steel structure.
Multiplying Metal
June 2024: Following foundations, steel is quickly rising out of the ground and peeking above the fence line. Steel is scheduled to be complete in 4 weeks!
Finishing Foundations
April-May 2024: Foundation work is well under way with pile cap reinforcing and concrete pours. Work on the sub-grade structure will be complete by early June.
Ending Excavations!
March 2024: Foundation excavations and installation of all 170 piles wrapped up, making way for subsequent foundation construction activities like rebar installation and concrete pouring
Digging Deep
February 2024: Crews began excavating for foundations, completed the test pile program (which involved installation and monitoring of 20 initial piles), and began installing the remaining 150 piles.
Construction Commencing
January 2024: The project received approval from the Division of the State Architect, marking the beginning of key construction activities such as test pile and vibrated stone column installation and monitoring.
Ready to Roll!
December 2023: To further prep for the start of construction, asphalt was installed on a portion of the site to ensure a clean site and access through construction.
New (temporary) Neighbors
November 2023: Crews installed temporary power for new construction trailers. The on-site team will soon be growing as foundation construction gets underway in early 2024.
Sayonara, Soil!
October 2023: Soil settlement levels were achieved and the imported soil was hauled away, making way for rough grading and further site prep.
Mountain Monitoring
July-September 2023: During the last few months of soil surcharge, settlement levels are being monitored and recorded to ensure soil compaction is proceeding as predicted.
Settle Down, Soil!
April - June 2023: While construction activity at the site may seem minimal, the imported soil is hard at work consolidating the layers below. Soil is settling between 6" and 30" across the site!
Mount Mission Bay
March 2023: Roughly16,000 cubic yards of soil were imported to the site. The 6'-9' tall mound will weigh down and consolidate the existing soil, prepping it for construction. Soil settlement will last about 6-7 months.
And the award goes to...
February 2023: San Francisco Unified School District and McCarthy/DLR Group had the honor of receiving an Award of Excellence for Mission Bay School in the “Project-in-Design” category of CASH (California’s Coalition for Adequate School Housing) / AIA CA (American Institute of Architects California Council) Leroy F. Greene Design and Planning Awards.
Adios Asphalt!
January 2023: The future home of Mission Bay School is kicking off the new year with sitework! Construction crews demolished and hauled off 150 truckloads of asphalt and removed all underground utilities. Next steps include installing wick drains and piezometers to support and monitor soil consolidation.
Mission Bay School Shovel Ready Ceremony
On October 27, SFUSD joined with the Mission Bay community and civic partners to commemorate the start of construction of Mission Bay School! The project has been envisioned for over two decades and has received broad support from the community and City.

Mission Bay School - Project Information Link to this section
San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) is developing a new Mission Bay School, located in the burgeoning Mission Bay neighborhood. Concurrent with an existing legal agreement between the San Francisco Office of Community Investment and Infrastructure and the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) to designate Mission Bay Parcel 14 as a new school site, the SFUSD Board of Education tasked the Superintendent to develop the project using a robust process involving school and community stakeholders. Mission Bay School is being delivered by the 2016 Proposition A Bond program.
The school program, as defined by the District, consists of:
- A TK - 5 Elementary School, plus a pre-kinder program with access to high-quality teaching and learning.
- A Linked Learning Hub for high school students where they are offered unique opportunities to connect their learning with career experiences and workforce readiness.
- A Professional Learning resource for teachers and staff to receive training in support of ever-changing methods of teaching and ways to engage students.

School Programming
The development of specific programming concepts for Mission Bay School began several years ago through SFUSD’s leadership teams for Instruction, Policy and Operations, School Portfolio Planning, and Special Projects. This journey has engaged a broad and diverse range of District stakeholders, teachers, staff, students, families and community members.
These concepts have guided project development through design, creating a solution that is specific to the needs of Mission Bay School, while providing a path for this project to be a beacon for the District.
Basic Project Information
- Property is approximately 2.5 acres
