Spring Social Emotional Learning Survey Link to this section
Each Spring in SFUSD, staff, students, and families are surveyed regarding their experiences at schools (culture and climate). The SEL/Culture Climate surveys take place each year February - March.
Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Surveys Link to this section
In addition to school culture and climate, we also assess the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) of students in grades 4-12. Based on compelling research, social-emotional learning is an important complement to academic preparation in helping our students succeed in college, career, and life.
Each school survey is accessed via a unique link, so contact your school to participate in the Family Survey. Sample Student surveys are available to view the questions, and the survey is given online at schools.
Four social-emotional competencies included in the survey are: self-management, social awareness, growth mindset, and self-efficacy. These four competencies were selected based on research.
Adapted from: CORE SEL: Background Information and Research Base
Self-management
Self-management refers to a student’s ability to regulate his/her emotions, thoughts, and behaviors effectively. Students with strong self-management skills arrive to class prepared, pay attention, follow directions, allow others to speak without interruption, and work independently with focus.
Social awareness
Social awareness is the ability to take the perspective of and empathize with others from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Social awareness is prerequisite for interacting effectively with peers and authority figures.
Growth Mindset
Students with a fixed mindset believe that their intelligence and talents are fixed at a certain level. By contrast, those with a growth mindset believe that their abilities can be developed through effort.
Self-efficacy
Students with strong self-efficacy have confidence in their ability to succeed and to exert control over their own motivation, behavior, and environment.
