Community Advisory Committee for Special Education
CAC MONTHLY UPDATE
Hello CAC Community -
The last month has been an incredibly difficult time for families of students with IEPs in San Francisco. On Monday, October 7th, the CAC Board met with the Superintendent to discuss the impact of the recent hiring freeze and the staffing crisis on our children. As a state mandated advisory committee and as parents of students with disabilities who have been directly impacted by the staffing challenges and pending school closures, the CAC takes the current situation very seriously. While there remain many concerns and questions, the CAC looks forward to working with district leaders to find a better path forward for our families.
Meanwhile, the CAC committees on mental health, literacy, math, staffing and inclusion are up and running. If you are passionate about any of these topics and want to help the CAC move the needle on these issues please consider joining an upcoming meeting (details below).
The September CAC meeting was a comprehensive overview of Mental Health Services in our schools and in our city. Representatives from SFUSD Psychology Services and Department of Public Health and National Alliance for Mental Illness joined us to talk about their programs. You can get all the September meeting materials and register for the October 24th CAC Board of Ed Town Hall on our CAC meeting page.

PURPOSE OF THE CAC
The purpose of the Community Advisory Committee (CAC) for Special Education is to champion effective special education programs and services and advise the Board of Education on priorities in the Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA).
The State Education Code mandates that each SELPA have a CAC and that a majority of CAC members are parents of students with disabilities.
Joining the CAC gives community members an opportunity to have their opinions heard and make a difference in the way special education is conducted in our area. Find out more on the CAC membership page.
