Alternatives to Yellow Bus Transportation
There are several transportation options available for youth and families in San Francisco. Below are resources for public transportation, biking, and walking.
Free Muni Passes for San Francisco Youth Program
Effective August 15, 2021, household income limits will be eliminated for the Free Muni for Youth program. All youth ages 18 and younger will be able to ride regular Muni bus and rail service for free. No application, proof of payment or tapping in with a Clipper card will be required--simply board the Muni vehicle (except Cable Cars) and ride. Note that:
- For access in Muni Metro stations, youth should enter at the gate closest to the station agent booth. If no one is present, the gate will open automatically.
- Youth over the age of 16 are encouraged to carry an ID in case they are asked to provide proof of age.
- Current Free Muni for Youth participants who use Cable Car service for regular travel can continue using their Clipper card for free fares. All other youth residing in San Francisco who will be using Cable Car service regularly may request a special Clipper card from the SFMTA for free service by completing and submitting this online form. To replace a lost or stolen Clipper card, contact Clipper Customer Service at 1.877.878.8883.

Muni routes serving city schools
Did you know most schools are within a five-minute walk of a Muni stop?
It's easy to ride transit to or from school. Every elementary, middle, and high school in the San Francisco Unified School District is served by at least one Muni route. There's even a special "School Trippers" service, extra afternoon Muni buses on existing lines that begin their route at a school site, pick up students at the end of the school day, then continue along the route as normal. They provide capacity for student-serving routes, leading to a less crowded trip for everyone.
