The Design Challenge
Independence High School will use an Innovation Award in 2016-17 to support their students to be more engaged and to complete their school work on time.
Independence High School serves a diverse set of students, many of whom have not been successful in a traditional school setting. In order to accommodate their students, the school offers a flexible schedule and less required class time. However, the school still identifies about 23% of its students as chronically absent. Additionally, this high percentage of chronic absenteeism creates the challenge of graduating its students college and career ready. If the school increases participation and engagement in the school work, they would be able to increase graduation rates and decrease drop out rates.
