The Design Challenge
100% of the student population at Civic Center has had serious discipline or behavioral issues at other schools, ultimately leading to their removal from the traditional school system. Almost every student is foster, homeless, social service, and/or juvenile justice involved. In recent years, Civic Center has been functioning as a small traditional high school, and the staff realized that this model was not meeting the needs of their students. This is an opportunity to tackle school differently and build a school that is structured around the goal of meeting their students’ most pressing learning needs so they can access and ultimately succeed in other learning spaces.
